Celebrating 30 Years of Waves
Published on 02 December 2025
Waves is our beloved Leisure Centre in Highett, built in 1995 and a cornerstone of the Kingston community for three decades. During this time, the centre has evolved with major facility upgrades, growing staff teams and an ever-expanding community of members of all ages, like Wilma and Elaine.
As part of the celebrations for Waves’ 30th anniversary, we’ve spoken with some of our long-standing members about their experiences and the special role Waves has played in their lives.
Wilma and her two boys (now in their 60s) swam in the pool when it was known as Turner Road Pool (an outdoor pool), and when Waves opened, she continued to use the facility. Wilma now participates in the water fitness classes. She does some of her own dumbbell exercises as rehab for a shoulder injury so she can continue playing tennis.
Elaine originally joined Waves in the early 2000s through the COTA (Council on the Ageing) program. Her favourite class is the Active Seniors class, and she uses the gym. She also attends an off-site class in Parkdale (Strength & Stretch with Sue). Elaine enjoys the social aspect, staying active and loves how many friends she's made along the way.
Swimming and light exercises like Tai Chi are great ways to stay active, and Waves offers programs you can enjoy and participate in.
